Fiber Optical Backbone

ZANLINK has currently covered major parts of the Zanzibar Stone Town and other outskirts of the Stone Town with Fiber Optic Network making us the first and the only ISP in Zanzibar to deploy a fiber optical network. With such a Network in Stone town any client is assured of a very fast, reliable and stable connection at improved prices. Since our Fiber optical Network has various termination point of presences (PoPs) it becomes possible and very easy for clients residing in stone town to be connected to the Internet via a CAT5e cables tapped from our fiber optical backbone. This eliminates the need to deploy the costly solution of wireless equipment in stone town.

Fiber optical cable has the ability to carry more information and deliver it with greater fidelity than either copper wire or coaxial cable or any wireless equipment. It also supports much higher data rates, and at greater distances, than coaxial cable. It is also totally immune to all kinds of interference, including lightning, and doesn’t conduct electricity. Since fiber is made of glass, it will not corrode and is unaffected by most chemicals. It can be buried directly in most kinds of soil or exposed to most corrosive atmospheres without significant concern. Also since the only carrier in the fiber is light, there is no possibility of a spark from a broken fiber, and thus no fire hazard. Fiber optic cable is ideal for secure communications systems because it is very difficult to tap but very easy to monitor.

The fiber Backbone consists of about 70 main Point of Presence( POP) that gives it the capability of transporting IP traffic from every hook and corner of the Stone Town. The number of the POPs are increased on regular basis to give our fiber ring an extended coverage to areas that are still uncovered by our Fiber ring. ZANLINK aims to now extend these POPs to other high density urban areas where a huge potential of clients demand our broadband and other convergent services. The fiber ring currently provides broadband and connectivity solutions to about 300 clients ranging from residential to huge corporates.

All our POPs have manageable switches, redundant fiber links, power and Ethernet protections as well as remote manageable devices to be able to manage and troubleshoot them easily. This Network is being monitored and improved on regular basis by our competent team of engineers.
