‘Hot-Spot’ (WLAN) access
in selected locations
“Hot Spot” is a wireless technology used to
transmit data via a local wireless LAN (WLAN) offering
customers high speed remote access to the Internet in
Public areas known as
“ 802.11b hot spots”. Hot spots are, well, hot. The idea
is simple: Business travelers get wireless Internet
access in areas such as airport lounges, hotels and
restaurants. The hot spots being implemented use WLAN
equipment based on the 802.11b standard, commonly known
as WiFi (Wireless Fidelity). Speeds are up to 11M bps,
enough for most typical business uses.
Wireless is freedom on the move. Imagine having access
to the Internet anytime, anywhere in your home or
office. Connect PC's, laptops, printers and scanners
from any room indoors and out. You can check your e-mail
from the garden, download documents while attending a
meeting or surf the Internet from the comfort of your
own sofa.
A wireless network connects your laptops, desktops and
computer peripherals, allowing you to share files,
simultaneous Internet connections and the network. With
wireless you have added freedom to move from one
location to another and can add additional users cost
effectively. With a wireless network you can expand your
business and retain your investment. Add users without
the need for timely cable installations - move premises
and take the network with you. You can install a network
in hard to wire locations where cabling is costly or not
allowed. Wireless Networking is the most adaptable
technology for multiple environments - whether it is at
home or in the office. Applications are also available
for public places and indoor/outdoor environments.
If you own a hotel then this can be ideal for you. You
can have the “hot spots” into your rooms, reception, or
Restaurants. The customers can just move in with their
laptops and start using the Internet in these areas. If
you also offer conference facilities in your hotel then
you can have the WLAN facilities in your conference
room. Participants can walk into the conference room
with their own laptops and just start using them without
having to plug in any cables. You can advertise this
facility as a “value added services” offered by you to
give promotion and massive boost to your business.
Features of a Wireless LAN
-
Mobility and flexibility: Wireless LANs let you extend
your network to every inch of your building
-
Installation speed and simplicity: Installing a
wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can
eliminate the need to pull cable through wall and
ceilings
-
Installation flexibility: wireless technology allows
the network to go where wire cannot
-
Reduced costs of ownership: Cost of wiring is
eliminated. Long term cost benefits are greatest in
dynamic environments requiring frequent moves and
changes
-
Scalability: Wireless LAN systems can be configured in
a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific
applications and installations
-
Faster, cheaper and more secure than ever before.
-
Wireless offers fast deployment: there are no site
licenses to obtain, cables to run or trenches to dig.
With a wireless LAN you can be transmitting data in a
fraction of the time needed to install a wired
connection.
